Pair your HEPA filter with a carbon filter for cleaner air. An activated carbon filter captures odours and gases like volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds include harmful gases like formaldehyde and benzene and can cause cancer, throat irritation, dizziness, and other side effects. The carbon filter mesh comprises many carbon granules that have been treated to become highly porous. For this reason, they have enormous surface areas. Just 1 gram of activated carbon can have between 500 to 1500 m² of surface area! This massive surface area allows the carbon granules to trap harmful gas molecules, giving you that cleaner, odourless, chemical-free air.
Like the Blast Mini, the Blast carbon filter screen slots into the HEPA frame and sits between the fan and the HEPA filter. The lifespan of the carbon filter depends on the air quality around you, typically 1-3 months. One way to determine when to change your charcoal filter is to conduct a "smell test". After 3 months of use, you can do this by taking the filter out every 1-2 weeks and smelling it. If it gives off a metallic or acidic smell, it is saturated with VOCs, and it is time to replace it.
